This colonial cottage in Crows Nest, Queensland, sits on just under an acre of elevated land, with views across the surrounding countryside and towards the Bunya Mountains.
It’s a lovely setting for a country home, and I think the cottage suits it beautifully.
The house has traditional features including VJ walls and ceilings, polished timber floors, decorative fretwork and French doors opening onto the verandahs. The north-facing front verandah takes advantage of the views, while another verandah provides a more private outdoor space.
But one of my favourite features is actually outside the house.
The fencing!
We live on acreage in Brisbane, and while most of our fencing is perfectly good (thanks to the previous owners), it’s nowhere near as pretty as this. It’s such a simple feature, but I think it adds a lot to the property.

I love the stained glass in the front door and the view straight through the hallway to the back of the house.

I like that the kitchen feels at home in this cottage. It’s a practical space, and the butler’s pantry is a welcome addition, especially in a smaller country home.

The wood heater is a lovely feature in the living room. I can imagine it getting plenty of use during a Crows Nest winter. The timber floors and traditional details give these rooms plenty of character without needing much decoration.
